De geschiedenis van Knoll gaat terug tot 1938 wanneer Hans Knoll het merk opricht samen met zijn echtgenote Florence. De producten van Knoll krijgen onmiddelijk een internationale flair dankzij de samenwerkingen met sterarchitecten als Eero Saarinen, Franco Albini en kunstenaar Harry Bertoia. De ontwerpen zoeken de grens op tussen kunst en functionaliteit. Tal van ontwerpen bij Knoll maken vandaag de dag permanent deel uit van de collectie in het MoMa te New York.
